On March 13, 2025, a rupture occurred in the Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE) located in Estero el Vergel, within the Cube parish of the Quinindé canton in Ecuador. An environmental emergency has been declared due to oil contamination in the Esmeraldas River, which poses a threat to both the local population and wildlife in the coastal province of Esmeraldas. There are concerns that the oil may have already reached the sea along the Ecuadorian coastline. Authorities have indicated that the rupture was a result of landslides caused by intense rainfall. In response, resources and specialized teams have been mobilized to address the consequences of the spill
