The primary objective of this study is to analyze the development trends of satellite technologies for forest fire monitoring and damage assessment using satellite imagery and to explore their practical applicability. To this end, the study investigates the current technical advancements and application cases of various satellite systems used for forest fire detection and monitoring both domestically and internationally. It also examines response strategies based on the complex interaction of meteorological factors, such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed, as well as anthropogenic causes, including arson and accidental fires. Approximately 70 percent of South Korea's territory is forested, and due to its topographical features and seasonal climatic variations, many areas are highly vulnerable to forest fires, which highlights the importance of conducting systematic detection surveys. This study analyzes the technical characteristics of high-resolution multispectral satellites such as KOMPSAT-3A and SENTINEL-2A MSI, including spatial resolution, spectral bands, revisit cycles, and monitoring coverage. Based on thermal anomaly detection using infrared sensors, the study presents a procedure for identifying affected areas and quantitatively estimating forest damage rates. These findings contribute to building a knowledge base for satellite-based forest fire detection and can serve as foundational data for developing future forest fire prediction and response strategies.
